BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 9 Jan - Kolej IGS Brunei, mencatat sejarah sebagai kolej swasta pertama di Negara Brunei Darussalam yang mendapat kelulusan Kementerian Pendidikan untuk menjalankan program-program ijazah sepenuhnya.

Program-program tersebut yang berjalan antara dua hingga tiga tahun akan dikendalikan di sini. Pengetua Kolej IGS Pengiran Hajah Fatimah Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin dalam satu kenyataan berkata, penawaran program-program ijazah IGS dari Universiti Teknologi Kreatif LimKokWing, (LKWUCT) Malaysia telah mendapat kelulusan baru-baru ini. Memorandum persefahaman antara IGS dan LKWUCT telah dimeterai pada 2009.

"Bagi pihak Kolej IGS dan Ahli-ahli Lembaga Pengarah, saya ingin mengucapkan setinggi-tinggi penghargaan dan terima kasih kepada Kementerian Pendidikan atas amanah dan keyakinan mereka terhadap kolej kami.

"Ini merupakan perkembangan yang amat menggembirakan memandangkan pelajar-pelajar kolej swasta yang berusaha mengejar ijazah dari universiti-universiti yang diiktiraf kini tidak lagi perlu ke luar negara.kesulitan para pelajar swasta daripada perlu meneruskan pengajian ke luar negara," kata beliau.

Program-program ijazah yang diluluskan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan ialah Bachelor Of Business Administration (Hons.), Bechelor Of Business (Hons.) Accounting, Bachelor Of Science (Hons.) Information Technology dan Bachelor Of Science (Hons.) in Software Engineering With Multimedia.

Syarat-syarat kemasukan termasuklah Diploma Kebangsaan (ND), Diploma Tinggi Kebangsaan (HND) dan GCE 'A' Level. Pelajar-pelajar yang memiliki kelayakan lain akan dipertimbangkan berdasarkan kes-kes tertentu.

Menurut Pengiran Hajah Fatimah, pemegang HND yang memenuhi syarat kelayakan akademik akan dimasukkan terus ke Tahun Dua program masing-masing dan dengan itu, mereka hanya perlu belajar selama dua tahun untuk mendapat ijazah.

In the IT department, primary responsibility is to teach subjects in the areas of Networking, Servers, Hardware, Operating System, Multimedia, Programming and Database.

KIGS LENDS HELPING HAND TO NEEDY FAMILY - BB

A mother and her son received a heartwarming gesture from the International Graduate Studies College (IGS) as the students lifted their spirits to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri which is just around the corner.

Students and lecturers participated in the event to lend a helping hand in making their house cleaner and more comfortable to live in.

Fifty-seven-year-old retiree, Hajah Dauyah and her son Mohd Noor, 27, have been unable to celebrate Hari Raya for 10 years due to the dilapidated state of their house after facing financial difficulties.

According to Hajah Dauyah, she previously worked at the Agriculture Department. Her husband passed away when Mohd Noor was only 11years old.

"Now I depend on the B$200 financial aid from the Community Development Department and my son is employed at a coral products-processing company," said Hajah Dauyah.

Mohd Noor explained that he is currently working on an on-call basis and he receives a B$300 paycheck. As an alternative when not working, they depend on growing their own vegetables and catching fish just to make ends meet.

"We are thankful for the help rendered by the young people at IGS and their lecturers who have done an amazing job cleaning our whole house including the surroundings to lessen the burden we have been facing for so long," said Mohd Noor.

One of the leading members of IGS, Wan Haji Mohd Faisal Haji Zaini, said that around 150 students volunteered for the charitable work and were divided into four groups. They have been working hard from August 21 till yesterday to clean up the premises.

"We have narrowed down the list of six needy families provided by the Community Development Department. Six of us from IGS went out and interviewed the six families to find out which one of them needed help the most. Hajah Dauyah's residence was infested with insects and had a stench when we first came in to help but praise be to Allah, everything has gone as planned and it is now a better home to live in," he said.

A TOTAL of 73 students from the International Graduate Studies College (IGS College) Brunei are walking proud today after graduating in their respective courses at the third convocation of IGS College last night.

Eight students graduated from the Higher National Diploma in Business and Finance course and 11 from the National Diploma in the same course, while 19 graduated from the National Diploma in Computer Studies and 35 received certificate of Pre-National Diploma in Computer studies.

Best Student Award recipient, Dk Nazalita Nazerah Pg Razali, who graduated from the Higher National Diploma in Business and Finance, was very excited and proud of her personal achievement.

“I didn’t expect to grab the award as there was strong competitions in my class,” she said. The 22-year-old who plans to pursue her undergraduate studies in the UK, has already received offer letters from Kent University, Aston University and Keele University and is now awaiting for the Ministry of Education to award her with a scholarship.

She also aims to specialise in human resource management to help reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

“We have quite a significant number of unemployed graduates in the country. So I am looking to contribute in that area in the future (help solve the unemployment problem) if I become an expert in human resource management,” she said.

Dk Nazalita also shared her idea to come up with solutions for unemployed people who do not possess strong educational background.

In her speech, she thanked the lecturers and the management of IGS College for “helping her to achieve her dream”.

She appreciated the teaching methodologies adopted in the class including lectures, group discussion, debates, case studies and class presentations that helped her to develop the skills required in the present dynamic business environment.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Nur Fajrina Hj Ibrahim who graduated from the National Diploma in Computer Studies, acquired the invaluable skill of time management over her three-year course.

“I’ve never really faced a big challenge during my course, but I had difficulties in managing my (personal) time and balancing it out with my studies,” she said, adding that she conducted a lot of group discussions and held study gatherings with her friends to overcome her challenge.

The former Rimba Secondary School student is due to sit for her International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at the end of this month in order to further her studies in Australia.

“I’m very excited and I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time,” she said, speaking of her feelings before receiving her graduation award.

Izzah Nazurah Hj Abd Rahman, was another student who also expressed her excitement after having graduated from the National Diploma in Business and Finance.

Starting her three-year course in 2007, the 19-year-old could hardly believe that she reached her present level of education.

She shared that her biggest challenge was during the final project in which she had to deal with both the public and the government sectors through several business projects.

The business-minded graduate shared her ultimate dreams of starting her own company and become a successful local entrepreneur in the future.

Pg Hjh Fatimah PSJ Pg Hj Abd Momin, Chief operating Officer (CEO) of IGS College, congratulated the graduating students in her welcoming address.

She highlighted the various programmes undertaken by the college to align with the Vision 2035 as well as the mission of the Education Ministry, which is to “Provide Holistic Education to Achieve Fullest Potential For All”.

The CEO also shared that degree programmes could be available and offered in September upon approval by the Ministry of Education , following a recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Lim Kok Wing University of Creative Technology Malaysia.

On hand to present the awards to the winner was Minister of Health Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.

APPLICANTS of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council's tithes fund may get assistance in the form of housing and education, instead of a monthly allowance, as they are treated on a case-to-case basis, an official clarified yesterday.

Muib Acting Secretary Hj Abd Wahab Hj Sapar explained that an applicant's background will be comprehensively studied prior to awarding the assistance.

"An applicant sometimes can sustain their daily living but is unable to afford education or housing costs if he or she wants to further his or her studies and vice versa, so we (Muib) will study and consider the possibility of approving their applicants," he said during a ceremony to award education assistance to a student.

He said that depending on how severe is the situation of an applicant, he or she might even be receiving monthly financial allowances from the zakat (tithes) and other forms of assistance at the same time.

He added that the clarification was important for the public to know as some might have misunderstood the nature of the assistance.

A sum of $4,630 from the zakat (tithes) fund was awarded to Norhashimah Hj Abdul Kadir, a daughter of an underprivileged family to bear the costs of her 2010 Pre-National Diploma course in Computer Studies at International Graduate Studies (IGS) College in Kiulap during the ceremony yesterday.

Hj Abd Wahab also shared that three more students were expected to be handed the aid this month.

The students will be pursuing their studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Laksamana College of Business (LCB) and IGS College.

In his speech, Hj Abd Wahab hoped that the recipients would make full use of the assistance by achieving good results during the period of the course.

"Muib will always, from time to time, be providing assistance to those in dire need of help to sustain proper future development of the people of the nation," he added.

Chief Executive Officer of IGS College Pg Hjh Fatimah Pg Setia Jaya Pg Hj Abd Momin lauded the assistance given by His Majesty's Government through Muib, to ensure that the future of youths in the nation is being taken care of.

The CEO hopes to see more young students awarded with the assistance, if they are unable to continue their studies due to their poor financial situation.

Private sector has a big role to play in education

Fifty-five IGS College students received their certificates after successfully completing their Computer Studies as well as Business and Finance Studies at the Pre National Diploma and National Diploma during the 2nd convocation ceremony at the IGS College building in Kiulap yesterday evening.

The guest of honour who handed over the certificates was Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah bin Hj Abd Wahab, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.

The ceremony commenced with the recital of the Holy Quran by Awang Hj Mohd Zulfadli Shahnoel bin Muhd Noeh, one of the HNDC 08/02 students of the college.

The CEO and Principal of IGS College, Pengiran Hjh Fatimah binti PSJ Abdul Momin, in a speech said that eight students have received National Diploma in Computer Studies, 14 students National Diploma in Business and Finance, 29 students Pre National Diploma in Computer Studies and four students Pre National Diploma in Business and Finance. Three students received Excellence Awards.

She said, in addition we have created the HELP programme, which stands for "Holistic Excellence Leadership Programme" that emphasises on attendance, self discipline, attire, leadership skills and also competitiveness amongst the different academic groups to vie for the best student and best group award every month.

Pg Hjh Fatimah added that in addition to the new workplace demands, the IGS College is also facing the challenge of information technology (IT) in almost every facet of the working environment.

The guest of honour in his speech said, "We are very proud that 55 students have successfully completed their studies in either Computer Studies or Business and Finance Studies at the Pre National Diploma and National Diploma levels.

"I am very pleased that this college is living up to the dreams of its founder and in facing up to the challenges to provide quality education in response to the policy direction of His Majesty's Government to grow the private sector as the country strives to diversify the economy.

"There is no doubt that growing our private sector will require well trained businessmen and women who embrace innovation and the concept of continuous life long learning. This concept is clearly articulated in the government's education policy objectives in SPN-21," said Dato Hj Hamdillah.

In the Brunei context, the government is heavily entrusted in providing education to the people of Brunei Darussalam almost 'single-handedly' especially in the tertiary level. While this is not a problem as long as the country's revenue continues to allow educational funding to be provided, there could be a time in the future when such provision is no longer sustainable.

The Deputy Minister said, "We have anticipated this possibility and started JIS but we need to broaden it by making a long term plan and developing the capacity of the private sector to deliver quality education.

"This will require support and positive policy environment to allow the private sector to grow and be able to 'take over' partly some of the educational costs through some form of public-private partnership arrangements," he added.

In conclusion, the deputy minister summarised his personal viewpoint on the need to promote private education providers. Private education clearly plays an important role at many levels, second, the expansion of private education can bring many benefits to the government including reducing the financial burden as it encourages more innovation and relevance and increased efficiency in delivery and finally, the overall objective of the government must be to create an enabling environment for the private sector growth.

IGS holds Sports Day for students

INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDIES (IGS) College yesterday organised first Sports Day for the students, five years after its inception.

Speaking to the Brunei Times, Atique Ur Rehman, IGS college lecturer and marketing officer, said that, this activity was aimed at relaxing the students who have a very hectic learning schedule in the college.

"College offers various type of courses namely; Pre-National Diploma, National Diploma and the programmes offered here are accredited by Brunei Darussalam Accreditation Council, Ministry of Education (MOE)," he said.

This activity would also foster the relationship among students, he said.

They were divided in four teams namely; Blue, Green, Red and Yellow.

"This activity would also help students in their study as physical fitness is key to mental fitness and alertness," said Atique.

Masnorhafizah Md Zaini, IGS student, was of the view that the activity was a good effort by the college as emphasis should not be placed on learning activity alone as the importance of keeping the body and mind healthy can not be ignored.

"This is the first time ever in my life participating this kind of athletic event and I found that it was not that tiring at all as all the accumulated stress in my head has gone out," said the 23-year-old student.

Another IGS student, Izzah Nazurah Hj Abd Rahman, from business management course, said that she felt proud to be one of the pioneer to participate in this first Sport Day event by the college.

She said that it was not about the winning, it was all about the effort of participating.

"We will never improve ourself if we never dare to try and take the challenge," said Izzah.

As an overall result, the first place was won by the Green team, followed by Red team. The Blue team bagged the third place. Present as the guest of honour to present the prizes were the college principal, Pg Hjh Fatimah Pg Setia Jaya Pg Abdul Momin.

Atique said the event will be conducted annually at the college.

OUR HISTORY

The Kolej IGS was formed in the year 2002 to cater for the growing need of vocational education and training, particularly in the areas of business and information technology. The management of KIGS had realized that a large number of Bruneian students could not qualify for the public sector institutions of higher learning due to the limited places available, and the majority of them could not afford to study overseas due to the higher costs. In order to help young Bruneians realize their dream of achieving higher academic qualifications, it is focused on developing the undergraduate (1st Degree) program in Information Technology and Business Studies.

In the year 2003, the Government of His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam through the Department of Technical Education, Ministry of Education offered the Brunei Darussalam Technical and Vocational Education Council (BDTVEC) programs to the private sector. KIGS was the first private tertiary college to take the bold initiative and accept the challenge to develop such courses. To begin with, it focused on two of programs, namely: Business Studies and Computer Studies.

Within a year of becoming establishment, Kolej IGS became known to both local community and its neighbouring countries. It develops its strength through the linkages with its Programme Moderators who originated from the United Kingdom and Australia. It is through the help of these moderators that the KIGS maintains its status and academic standard. With the gradual increase in the number of students, the number of permanent resource persons increased from six lecturers to ten and currently there are twelve well qualified lecturers in total to cater for seventy two students. All the faclitators are from the best blend of foreign and local professionals.

THE BUILDING
The KIGS owns a large double story building in the main commercial area of Kiulap. It has 18 tutorial rooms which can accommodate about 20 students each. For the ICT related courses, it has five computer labs equipped with the latest hardware and software equipment. The Multipurpose Hall, situated at the ground floor, can accommodate up to 300 people. It is equipped with modern audio and video equipments and offers ideal facilities for public lectures, seminars and workshops etc.

THE LOBBY
Its large centrally air conditioned student lobby is a usual meeting place for the students and lecturers during their free time. It provides the opportunity for the students and lecturers from different departments to get together to socialize within the college premises. The lobby is also used for exhibitions, expos or other indoor activities.

THE TUTORIAL ROOMS
KIGS has 18 tutorial rooms , well equipped with 15-20 chairs each and tables and a whiteboard. The room are fully air-conditioned with proper lighting.

THE COMPUTER LABORATORIES
We have 5 computer laboratories which accommodate 62 up-to-date computers with flat screen installed with the latest software. The building is also equipped with a satellite for the internet usage offering wireless internet connection throughout the premises.

THE MAINTENANCE / HARDWARE LAB
Used for training. This lab has hardware of all types to allow students of computer studies to experience hardware firsthand.

THE LIBRARY
Its central library, situated on the ground floor, has a large collection of books, magazines, journals, and other learning technologies, which offers a wider opportunity to students to enhance their knowledge not only in their relevant subjects, but other areas as well such as religion, current affairs, sports, science and technology etc.

THE ECA HALL
In addition to the usual academic activities, students are encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities like sports, music, art and culture. For this purpose, one hall has been allocated for the weekly extra curricular activities which include socio-cultural events and indoor sports. Wednesday afternoons have been reserved for extra curricular activities.

THE CAR PARK
Since the KIGS is located in a busy commercial area and where parking may be a problem, the management of the KIGS has reserved a large car parking space in the basement of the building for the convenience of the students and staff of the KIGS. Upon registration, students are issued with special parking passes which allow them to park their vehicles in the reserved area. For the safety reasons, this car park is manned by the security personnel of the building at all times.

THE STUDENT HOSTEL
The student population at KIGS is growing rapidly. There is a large number of students coming from far flung areas within Brunei. In addition to that, KIGS is also accepting foreign students. For their accommodation, KIGS, together with Setia Kenangan Sdn. Bhd., provides apartments within the college premises which are fully furnished with all the necessities like a bed, cupboards, writing table, sofa, television, dining table, washing machine and kitchen appliances with free water and electricity and maintenance. KIGS charges a nominal amount of BND$100.00 per month from the students.

THE PRAYER ROOM (SURAU)
For the convenience of the Muslim students, a prayer room has been built at the basement which can accommodate about 30 male 15 females at one time.

Teacher Training Course at Sultan Idris Training College, Perak Malay (October - December 1941 and September 1946 - January 1949), The College is now known as the University Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Perak, Malaysia.

WORKING EXPERIENCES
As a Teacher Trainee (1939 - 1940), was teaching at the Malay School Brunei Town.
